Prevention 0: The best way to prevent peri-implant disease?
Implants (4) :14-16 (2018)
Abstract
This article proposes "Prevention 0" as a pre-emptive approach to peri-implant disease prevention, addressing factors that should be considered before primary and secondary prevention measures. Peri-implantitis is characterized as a twenty-first-century version of periodontitis, increasing in occurrence with implant placement rates. The authors argue that before placing implants, clinicians should consider patient-specific aspects (systemic disorders, medications, habits, periodontitis history), site-specific considerations (tissue deficiencies, anatomical structures, patient phenotype), and the skills of the entire dental team including surgeon, prosthodontist, dental hygienist, and dental technician. The article emphasizes that implants may not always be in the best interest of the patient and that alternative prosthetic solutions should be considered from the beginning.
